The nation's home weatherization program began thirty years ago during the energy crisis of the 1970s. Funding for this highly successful program flows from the U.S. Department of Energy to Utah's Department of Community and Culture then to BRAG for the Bear River Region. The BRAG Weatherization Program has weatherized a total of 2790 homes in the tri-county area since its inception. Of this total, 879 of the homes were in Box Elder County, 1792 in Cache County and 119 in Rich County. The major goal of the Weatherization Assistance Program is to enable low-income individuals and families particularly the elderly and handicapped to participate in energy conservation programs, which will lessen the impact of utility costs on their household budgets. Participating households are averaging nearly 25 percent in savings, or approximately $400 per year. Individuals, families, elderly persons (60 years of age or older), and the handicapped who are poor and meeting 125 percent or less of the current federal poverty income guidelines are eligible to participate in the Weatherization Assistance Program. However, priority is given to the elderly and handicapped, high-energy consumption, emergency situations, and where pre-school children are present. |
