The Housing Choice Voucher Program
The Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly known as Section 8, is a long term monthly rental assistance program and is funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This program is administered by the Housing Authority which is part of the BRAG office.
The purpose of the program is to help eligible households pay for their monthly rent. The Housing Authority does not own any housing. An eligible household must locate a unit in the private rental market where the landlord is willing to participate with the program AND the unit meets the approval of the Housing Authority.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is not an emergency program. As an interested household applies for the program, their name will be placed on a waiting list until funding becomes available.
- A household applicant must first be income eligible to be considered for the program. This means that the household must not earn more than 50% of the area medium income as published by HUD.
- Program participants pay at least 30% of their gross adjusted income but not more than 40% of their gross adjusted income.
- The contract rent of the unit that the household chooses must be reasonable.
- The unit that the household chooses to use their assistance, must pass a housing inspection.
The Housing Authority encourages any interested households to apply for the Housing Choice Voucher Program by completing an application. Applications can be obtained at our office or you may download and print the application from this page. The Housing Authority does not have an online application process. A hard copy application must be completed and submitted to the Housing Authority office located at the BRAG office in Logan or the BRAG office in Brigham City. You may also fax your application to our office at (435) 752-6962.
In addition to the application, the only required document that is required to be submitted with the application is proof of the applicant’s current residence. Examples are the following: rental contract, utility bill, bank statement, driver’s license or any other third-party document that shows the address.
Once the Housing Authority has received the application, a housing caseworker will be assigned to the case and will contact the applicant for an intake appointment to determine eligibility for placement on the Housing Authority’s waiting list for the Housing Choice Voucher Program. At the intake, the Housing Authority caseworker will explain more about the program and answer any questions.
